Union Rally Mark the 40th Anniversary of The Historic Sit-Down Strike at General Motors in Brazil

The 40th anniversary of the General Motors auto workers historic strike in São José dos Campos, Brazil will be celebrated with an event at the union. The rally is open to the public and is scheduled for Monday (28), at 6 pm, at the organization's headquarters.

The emblematic strike began on April 11, 1985. Called by the Metal Workers Union of São José dos Campos, around 16,000 Auto Workers start the strike. They were fighting for a pay rise and a reduce the working week.

With combativeness, the GM workers were the protagonists of the movement, with historic sit-down strike resisting against riot police repression in the midst of the transition from the military dictatorship to the New Republic (see below).

Exhibition and debate
At the event, participants will be able to gain a better understanding of the strike through an exhibition of historic photos, some of them previously unseen. There will be 14 pictures from the union's Historical Collection, depicting the repression by the Military Police, the reasons for sit-down strike, the organization of the strike fund and the auto workers' self-defence.

There will also be a debate with the protagonists of the movement, including José Luiz Gonçalves, Ivan Trevisan and Toninho Ferreira.
